There is the added bonus of a book within a book, as we get to read Tyler and Emmie’s sections of the comic they are writing for Art. Both however are dealing with friendship challenges, doing what’s right and not just what’s cool. Just like the characters themselves their sections of the story are in different styles. Middle school is tough – trying to fit in, make friends, and find out who you really want to be.īoth Tyler and Emmie tell their stories alternatively throughout this graphic novel. This is the 5th in the Emmie & Friends series, but it can be read without reading the previous 4. After always being quiet and shy, standing up for herself is near impossible but what she knows she must do. Teaming up with him on an Art project is a dream come true for her, until the teasing starts up again.Ĭonfused and shamed, her damage control backfires, and she nearly loses her BFF. They begin to tease then make fun of him and Emmie, until he feels like he has to make a choice.Įmmie has had a crush on Tyler for ages, and her secret got out the worst way possible, ( See Invisible Emmie) but Tyler has been really nice about it. Teaming up with a girl in his class (Emmie) is something else he never expected, but he enjoys working with her on their joint project, even preferring to be doing that than basketball practice.Īn important game is coming up, and tensions rise between Tyler and his team mates. The basketball he lived for before starts to take a back seat to something else – Art. School turns out a little different this term for Tyler. He hopes one day to be as good as his older brother Zac. Now back at school he can hang out with his friends and play basketball. Tyler has spent most of his holidays on his own, especially when a blizzard kept everyone at home. Most kids would rather stay on their overseas holiday or in their rooms playing video games. The art work is stellar as always.Tyler knows wanting to go back to school after winter break isn’t normal. But I think Tyler’s story alone would have made this a better fit for me.įans of the series will definitely want to pick this one up. And I agree, she needed more depth than that. Her friendship issue felt forced, like it was there to give her story more depth than just her crush. Personally, Emmie’s story felt more like an interruption than an enhancement of that story. This is some great, meaty stuff, and I really enjoyed it. AND he’s also wrestling with his identity and his own feelings about art and basketball aside from the pressure he is getting from others. Tyler is also dealing with peer pressure about basketball vs art as well as his friendship with Emmie. And when Tyler makes an effort to seek out his older brother about it, it strengthens their relationship and opens communication. He’s noticing how shallow his relationship is with his dad. I think Tyler’s story, though, could have been enough on its own. I think some readers will enjoy watching Tyler and Emmie figure out their friendship from different angles. Emmie is also dealing with a friendship situation while she negotiates her ongoing crush on Tyler. I was surprised this wasn’t told completely by Tyler. This is book 5 in the Emmie & Friends series after Invisible Emmie, Positively Izzy, Just Jaime (♥♥♥♥), and Becoming Brianna (♥♥♥♥). Tyler and Emmie take turns telling this story, as well as telling the story within the story. Maybe he should just do his own project and try to get back in the zone, with both his more popular friends and with basketball. To make things worse, the guys are hassling him about spending time with Emmie. Now they’re friends – and they’re working together on a graphic novel project for class.īut Tyler is getting caught up in the art project, and basketball is suffering – and right before the big game, too. And it’s helped him overcome the awkwardness with Emmie over that note. Tyler has recently rediscovered how much he enjoys art.
